Robert Holzhauer, MDRobert J. Holzhauer, M.D.
Dr. Holzhauer grew up on Long Island, went to college in Binghamton, then Tulane University Medical School in New Orleans. He then returned to NYS for Pediatrics and Allergy-Immunology training at the University of Rochester Medical Center. He performed two years of service in the US Army as the military's only Allergist between San Francisco and Los Angeles, California. After two years in the Army, Dr. Holzhauer went into practice as the first Allergist in San Luis Obispo County on the central coast of California.

Dr. Holzhauer returned to Rochester in 1992, to take advantage of the opportunity to practice with his U of R mentors and to be closer to family. He has enjoyed playing a major role in growing Allergy Asthma Immunology of Rochester (AAIR) to a group of eight physicians with four offices. AAIR enjoys a national reputation for excellence in the delivery of care to patients with allergic and immunologic disease (with special interest and expertise in asthma) and rheumatologic diseases (including the many forms of arthritis), for teaching (we do the major part of clinical teaching of our specialty for the U of R programs) and clinical research. In addition to participating in the pharmaceutical studies that help AAIR to stay at the forefront of our specialty, Dr. Holzhauer has participated in a U of R Department of Pediatrics study of a pre-school and kindergarten based intervention which has improved the lives of asthmatic inner-city youngsters.

Shortly after he returned to Rochester Dr. Holzhauer went back to school to earn his MBA at U of R's Simon School of Business and has become involved in the Rochester area's health care business community.  In 2005-2006, Dr. Holzhauer, then President and CFO of AAIR, served as President of the Monroe County Medical Society (MCMS). He served as a delegate to the House of Delegates of the Medical Society of the State of New York and chaired the Rochester Area Physicians Council. During his 7 years on the MCMS’s Executive Committee, Dr. Holzhauer served on a MCMS led task force studying physician work force issues for Greater Rochester and chaired the Greater Rochester Community-Wide Guidelines Steering Committee.

Dr. Holzhauer has moderated business-related symposia and presented workshops at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (AAAAI) for the past several years. He has been on the faculty of the AAAAI's Practice Management Workshop every year since it was begun in 2004 and will repeat that role in July of 2009. Dr. Holzhauer is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics as well as of the AAAAI, a member of the American College of Physician Executives (from which he has been awarded certification by the American Board of Physician Executives).

In 2007 Dr. Holzhauer took the next step in his career, joining Excellus, the largest health insurance company in Upstate New York, as Vice President and Chief Medical Office in the Western Regions. He still sees pediatric allergy patients one-half day per week in AAIR’s Perinton office.

Dr. Holzhauer and his wife, Daryl, live in Fairport. His eldest son, daughter-in-law and 4 grandchildren live in Florida and a stepson is a restaurant manager in Pennsylvania . Dr. Holzhauer's younger son and daughter graduated college in 2005. Brendan graduated from law school in 2008; he now practices tax law in an accounting firm in Manhattan while living in Brooklyn (where Dr. Holzhauer was born and spent his first 4 years). Megan lives in Manhattan where she does commercial and retail leasing for CB Richard Ellis. When he is not working, Dr. Holzhauer enjoys music, playing golf and traveling with Daryl.
